We have a unique opportunity for a General Manager, Parts to join SMS Equipment Inc.  The largest Komatsu dealer in North America, SMS Equipment supplies construction and heavy equipment, parts and services to the construction, mining and forestry sectors.

The General Manager, Parts will be responsible for developing, directing and maintaining SMS Equipment’s Corporate Parts Support Group, including parts and inventory control, parts marketing, product support and sales. Based out of the corporate office in Acheson, this position reports to the Executive Vice President, Parts & Service, manages a team of four, and works closely with the executive leadership team.

SMS Equipment holds a unique position in the industry as a one-stop supplier of a broad range of equipment. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Primarily responsible for leading and managing day-to-day activities for the following functions across the Western Region and aligning with the objectives and directives of the EVP, Parts and Service:
    • Parts and inventory management
    • Product sales
    • Marketing
  • Collaborates with the EVP, Parts and Service to establish and formulate short and long-term business strategies, goals, objectives and performance goals thereby optimizing the profitability of SMS Equipment:
    • Supports the Company’s commitment to complete objectives and goals set forth in the business plan
    • Assists in the development of the business plan and budgets
    • Organizes and supports all branch operations and relevant site activities
    • Advises on strategic business development and key corporate planning issues and makes recommendations on major business decisions
    • Acts as an advisor on matters including planning, conduct of analyses, handling of issues, and provision of appropriate controls and reports
    • Advises on business activities, potential threats, opportunities and recommended actions
    • Develops operational and performance goals tailored to corporate and branch offices, which are aggressive and tied to long-term goals
    • Fosters a success-oriented and accountable environment
    • Works with business partners to develop lines of communication between SMS Equipment employees and key contacts within partner organizations to grow and develop product sales
    • Develops marketing plans and stocking strategies for new product lines and refreshes existing promotions to drive sales
  • Capable of driving and maximizing operational performance related to safety, environmental compliance, best practices, profitability, quality, cost reduction, workflow, productivity and human resources:
    • Reviews operating results, compares with established objectives, and takes appropriate measures to ensure results are realized and outcomes and performance are enhanced
  • Reviews, monitors and evaluates the merits and risks of product marketing by the Company or offered to the Company by prospective suppliers and manufacturers
  • Monitors utilization of fixed assets
  • Reviews, recommends and approves capital investments to maximize business opportunities, reduce costs and improve efficiencies
  • Approves, monitors and ensures compliance with all contractual customers, contractors and supplier agreements to minimize risk and maximize potential profitability
  • Monitors warranty policy and administration to ensure maximum warranty cost recovery as well as minimize risk exposure and costs
  • Directs and coordinates interpretation, implementation, and application of programs, policies and procedures, and regulatory requirements related to relevant sites, including, but not limited to:
    • Occupational health, safety and environment
    • Labour and employee relations
    • Compensation and benefits
    • Quality assurance
  • Develops, mentors, motivates, focuses on and retains a competent management and senior management team capable of achieving the Company’s mission:
    • Practices sound leadership and human relations principles to promote teamwork at all times
    • Identifies and develops appropriate training programs to ensure the Company’s competitive advantage is maintained and personnel are developed to maximize future opportunities


  • Previous Parts Manager experience is an asset as it will provide credibility with coaching and developing the team
  • A strong background in supply chain management relating to parts, inventory management, third-party logistics, etc.
  • Successful track record of mentoring, coaching, developing and leading teams
  • Experience in asset management, contract management and working with large budgets
  • Technologically savvy, strong with software and comfortable presenting to internal and external stakeholders
  • Bilingual (English/French) would be an asset
  • Comfortability with developing, implementing and executing operating guidelines and/or policies and procedures
  • Very comfortable with parts marketing and developing marketing materials (i.e., printed, incentives, promotions) to be delivered through e-Commerce
  • Strong data collection, forecasting and analytics skills as related to equipment life cycle, services, maintenance and process optimization
  • Possesses a strong sense of business development and is customer-focused; the incumbent will be dealing with suppliers at a high level


  • Undergraduate degree in business or post-secondary education in a related technical field
  • 10+ years’ experience within the mining/industrial industry
  • Previous Parts Manager experience
  • Proven experience developing, mentoring, motivating and retaining an engaged management team
  • Excellent background in supply chain
  • Demonstrated ability to set and achieve short and long-term goals and implement strategic plans
  • Exceptional understanding of corporate parts principles and concepts
  • Experience operating in a diverse environment with a focus on client and customer service and entrepreneurship
  • Experience working with KPI’s, setting objectives, targets and accountability
  • Experience managing budgets, people and technology to influence resources and outcomes, and steward of revenues/expenses
  • Demonstrated track record of identifying and evaluating unique opportunities, ideas, approaches and techniques for improving the organization (i.e., sales, products, cost reductions, use of resources, policies/procedures)
